IAN HUBERT

Director, writer, VFX samurai, manic creative triple threat wünderkind, and all-around good guy

Ian learned filmmaking by making films. In the 4th grade, he adopted an old Japanese camcorder and started playing with CG effects and movies. By the time he reached high school, he was making a feature-length film every year. The series SBFP he shot with friend Steve Bylsma was how Phil discovered him. After he graduated from high school in 2006, he started working on a script for a no-budget sci-fi flick Phil promised to produce.

His second summer job in August 2007 was shooting a feature-length film with the working title, Project London. Pre-production and production lasted only a few short months, but finishing the 650 visual effects shots has taken a couple of years, 24 or so different volunteers, and much love from the Blender community.

Ian learned the open source software, Blender, in high school, after being inspired by Colin Levy’s work involving a giant, four-legged robot.

Ian met Phil in 2004 when he was a sophomore in high school. Read his tale and an interview with jawbone.tv here.

NATHAN McCOY

Executive Producer, location manager, volunteer recruiter, Lead Chicken Wrangler & Coffee Provider, and tech exec at a little company called Microsoft

Nate has been a technology lover and sci-fi fan since his arrival on Earth. Well, at least since the Apollo 11 moon landing. He has devoured all of the film classics like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars, Planet of the Apes, and others in the same vein.

His producer prep began by assisting older bro, Phil, with the backyard magic show. He invented (er, discovered) the Internet some time later and accurately predicted that it was kind of a big deal. He wrote an ecommerce website or two (while he was visiting the future), stuck his big toes into online advertising, and now manages a large software development team at a Fortune 100 company (kind of a big deal).

He’s a piano player and rock band alum. The ‘80s were a blur of school, career, rock ‘n’ roll, and computers. Somehow, he survived.

Nate asked Phil about helping with the movie, and the rest is history. Read about the Phone Call of Destiny here.

PHIL McCOY

Executive Producer, mastermind, filmmaker, owner of Spiral Productions LLC, Head Visionary, and distribution revolutionary

Phil has been in showbiz since he started producing neighborhood magic shows in elementary school. By middle school, he’d borrowed an 8mm camera and shot his first film, Tom Schwartz Tree Surgeon, with friends Bill Fisher and Jack Rogers.

Next, he joined the “real” world and got a day job as a broadcast producer at an ad agency where he wrote, produced, and directed a multitude of radio and TV commercials. He collected some awards along the way – a Telly and a variety of other industry awards for media excellence. Clio, Grammy, Emmy, Tony and Oscar are on his list of to-gets.

In 1984, he launched PM Productions to work on independent and freelance projects. In 2007, he closed it and started Spiral Productions LCC to produce Project London.

He met Ian in 2004. Read the whole, fateful story here.

Project London is an independent, no-budget, feature-length, live action movie with vivid, intense, and marrow-vibrating visual effects and animations created with the open source software Blender (and other traditional software) and 250 (or so) worldwide volunteers. It’s led by The Triumvirate and set in Seattle, Washington. It will be available for worldwide viewing in its entirety very soon. In the meantime, check out an interview with the director: “Project London: The Most Ambitious No-Budget Effects Movie Ever”

SYNOPSIS

Nebraska Higgins leads a normal, easy life in Seattle and works as a mechanic at Joint Command’s Control Tower. Joint Command is Earth’s global police and military force established as a union between old Earth governments and Nalardian refugees and powered by their technology. Nebraska plunges into a world of struggle and intrigue after Joint Command kills his father, a hero known by his large robotic exo-suit, Arizona.

Jerry, (a gas-mask wearing Nalardian), Benin Belabora, (a calm but powerful mastermind), and Xing Xing Fix, (the knitting maven of mayhem), keep Nebraska safe from the pursuing Joint Command whilst trying to recruit him to the London Underground. Meanwhile, Nebraska discovers that the experiments which destroyed the Nalardian’s home world have been resurrected, and a force unlike any the universe can imagine is about to be unleashed. Can Nebraska deal with the loss of his father as interplanetary calamities threaten to destroy the world around him? Earth’s fate depends on the potential in a young man’s heart.

THE VISION

Budget: $ low
Visual Effects: 789
Volunteers: 250 (and growing)

The math is staggering. The passion is infinite. The model is breakthrough.

With few resources, we are making a completely independent, science-fiction, action-adventure, live action movie with intense effects. We are doing it with the unprecedented, and impressive, help of the Blender community and its dedication to open source animation software.

We will not bow down at the gilded gates of Hollywood. We will stand and distribute our film across the wilds of the Internet with the help of websites, blogs, word of mouth, and the sheer intensity of our belief in the power of The Individual.

We will reach our brothers and sisters in this movement through grassroots efforts and old school rabble-rousing. ¡Viva La Resistance!
