(L to R) Ian Hubert, writer director; Phil McCoy and Nathan McCoy, executive producers.

The edit system is working again! I’ve output uncompressed AVI files for Barry Gregg and will be meeting him at Starbucks in Edmonds (Washington, USA) in a couple hours to hand him a 2TB hard drive with the movie, Spiral’s Blackmagic Design Ultrascope, and our best wishes for a efficient and fun color correction. Yeah! Big step.

Getting that edit system repaired (again) was frustrating and time consuming. Right now, the system is working on screening disks (dialogue only and full mix versions) so Kyle Kramer, lead sound editor and Wes Slover, soundtrack composer, can evaluate where we are with the soundtrack. I’m very much looking forward to the screening.

More news soon!

Best regards,

Phil

Dang nab it. We were chugging along and then crash. The little battery on the edit system motherboard needed replacing, so I replaced it. But in the process of removing and replacing the Blackmagic card to gain access and replace the little battery, the card was fried. So dang. We have a replacement Blackmagic card on order. It should be here Thursday and I should be able to pickup the HP XW8400 Workstation, the heart of our edit system, from our friends at Media Tools this Friday.

I am so looking forward to seeing Project London with all the music in place! That’s what’s on deck. And also a chance to evaluate all the dialogue and sound design work done to date.

BTW, this isn’t the first time our edit system crashed. Thankfully through all of the crashes, we haven’t lost data!

The Triumvirate dined with Kevin Slover last night at Racha Thai Cuisine in Woodinville. It was a delicious evening and it was great getting to know Kevin. His nephew, Wes (soundtrack composer) joined us and our wide ranging conversation touched on the genesis of Project London, and popular audiophile formats (vinyl!) and gear from the 70s. Kevin, we thank you for your support and encouragement as we wrap up post-production.

Speaking of wrapping up, we are preparing for a screening in order to take stock of what is left to do. You already know that we’re focused on the soundtrack and color correction. Kyle Kramer, Lead Sound Editor has prepared mixes for all ten reels of the movie, it’s now in my ball court to get a Blu-ray burned for the screening. At the same time, I will be preparing to hand the movie back to Barry Gregg, which was already in his hands once, as DP during production. Barry has volunteered to complete the color correction on the movie and for this and so much more, we are supremely grateful.

While describing what it’s been like to get everything finished to one of my friends, he smiled and asked me if I had heard of the 90/10 rule. I have heard of the 80/20 (Pareto) rule, that states, roughly 80% of an outcome often come from just 20% of the related causes. “That’s well and good,” he said and went on to explain the 90/10 rule, “the last 10% of a challenging job often takes the same amount of energy as it took to get the project 90% done.” The truth of that statement exploded in my brain. That’s why I am so grateful for everyone on the team who continues to press forward with us to the finish line. We can see the light at the end of the tunnel and we’re gonna get there!

More exciting news soon!

Sincerely,

When I was younger I thought all cities were the same size. All down-towns just a mile or two across, surrounded by endless suburbs. But man! After growing older and seeing a few more cities I realized: Seattle is tiny!

It’s hard to go somewhere in Seattle and not bump into a place we filmed at. I was looking at one of the first shots in the movie, and was amused by how many of our other filming locations were visible in that one shot. Just- whew! Holy cow. Seattle seems smaller every day.

Whew! You don’t composite almost a thousand shots for a film without learning a few tricks! I learned a lot of time-saving techniques over the course of the past few years, and wanted to show you guys one of the cooler (though not as universally practical) ones; how to make some clouds and environments look 3d!

I was SUPER out of it when I recorded this (I didn’t realize how out of it till later in the day, when I tried to interact with actual people), but I think that lends it a certain something (lack of coherent thought). Naw, I kid. Check it out.

Read this after you watch the video:

So, I didn’t push this technique nearly as far as I could have. I stuck basically with using the image itself as the displacement map—but if you have an actual depth map? Whew! The options are limitless (hyperbole alert!)! If you have a still render of a ship in flight, and also the depth map, you can displace the ship render so that it looks 3d! Meaning you can do a 2.5d compositing deal and actually have a bit of perspective shift on the layers! It’s amazing how little perspective shift it takes to suddenly make something look 3d, and our brains are totally hardwired to be super-sensitive to those changes, meaning even if folks can’t put their finger on why, the shot will still feel a lot more realistic. I didn’t get into this in the tutorial really, because all of the really cool shots I’ve done that for are in the finale of the film (which is still a secret, actually!). But maybe I’ll put together another little something sometime.

Hope this helps someone!

Half Acre Day is the band that never sleeps releasing a slew of beautiful songs in their Lunar Singles collection as well as creating an exclusive new song, Pythagoras Switch, for Project London. The song premiered at the recent Seattle Interactive Conference, Battle of the Geek Bands competition where Sir Mix-A-Lot, one of the celebrity judges, commented enthusiastically about the song and the band.

We're sharing this bit of the song with you now in hopes that it will inspire you to help us finish the movie. We have two major hurdles to overcome—color correction and sound design and mixing. Our IndieGoGo.com campaign is almost over and we haven't hit our goal by a long shot. That said, we are undaunted. We will press on and we sure hope you will help us with a donation and/or sharing links to the campaign everywhere on Facebook and Twitter.

Who is Anton Urban? Why is he introducing the premiere of Half Acre Day’s new song? These are valid questions that deserve answers. Anton has supported Project London from the beginning, when it was just a teensy little germ of an idea. He’s been a sounding board for ideas, he plays a bit part (that still may be cut), and he helped us with the connective story tissue between Project Manhattan (the prequel novella) and the movie. Also very significant, Anton introduced us to Half Acre Day. So it’s only appropriate that he introduces the premiere of Pythagoras Switch.
