Anytime, adventure movies are in demand. Watching someone survive in the jungle or solve the zagadki is always fascinating. People want to be in the place of the hero, feel adrenaline, excitement and other vivid emotions. Why are we so drawn to reveal the secret in this or that film? We will find out in this article.

What is an adventure film?

Krasilnikov’s modern dictionary tells us that it’s about the stunted kind of feature film. It has the same criteria as an adventure in literature. The dynamism of an adventure film is very close to an action movie: a quick frame change, a lot of characters, a constant movement — it’s not just in the movie with gunfights, but also here. What makes the action movie tougher. it has a lot of blood, fights and weapons. In the adventure, the main character has to think originally in order to get out of the situation.

Adventure, as in life, can be different. Films are also divided into sub-genres:
● costume adventure,
● Family
● fantasy
● romance
● marine theme,
● Space
● a story about a thug,
● a military adventure.

This classification is proposed by Helmut Gauss and Jacqueline von Hoy.

Features of the genre

Standing out among other genres, adventurous cinema gives a person the most important thing – an interesting plot and an exciting spectacle. The viewer goes to the cinema or watches a movie in order to have an exciting time, relax and at the same time, go into a parallel fictional world.

Why do so many people prefer to choose this particular genre? There are many reasons, one of them is universality. The adventure film is equally liked by both adults and children.
Often the basis is an intrigue that is not revealed until the end of the film. How did the main character die? Did anyone survive the disaster? Will they meet at the end? An insane number of questions makes you stay until the credits appear.
As a rule, the “frame” of the adventure is built as follows: a fictional story is used. Historical context may be present, but it is unlikely that the film will be shot really on a real basis, because in life everything is not as interesting as our imagination can draw. The main characters get into a situation from which you can get out if you apply an unconventional approach, show creativity and resourcefulness. There is a chain of events that leads to a happy ending.
If you are tired of such clichés, where the character encounters an incredible situation, you can choose a film that is built on a very real scenario. The difference will be that it is for the hero that the event will be unusual.

Another characteristic feature of adventurous cinema is the interweaving with other genres. For example, the same action movie, where in addition to clues there will be fights. When during the passage of various obstacles the main character gets into funny situations, this is already an “admixture” of comedy. You can show the story that I unfold in the world of elves and gnomes. Here will be an interweaving of adventure with fantasy.

An important part of any film, especially an adventure, is emotion. If a movie doesn’t evoke it, think it’s a bad movie. Watching an adventure, the viewer gasps and gasps, closes his eyes and laughs, cries and says, “Damn, don’t go there!” The more feelings, the higher the probability that the film is really good and will receive high marks from the public and critics.

Unexpected twists, a twisted plot, the main character who overcomes obstacles – three principles on which this genre rests. And a character doesn’t have to evoke only positives motions. Even if he killed a bunch of people, the author finds an excuse for him. Often the viewer needs to “root” for the main character.

In the classic version of the adventure, the hero behaves outside the box. He makes decisions that the average person wouldn’t make, often takes risks. The example that immediately comes to mind at the word “adventure” are the Indiana Jones movies. Traveling and searching for treasure is the basis of films about this hero.

Reasons for the popularity of adventure films

The reason that lies on the surface is that the audience wants to get away from the routine and gray life. That’s not to say that everyone’s life is boring. If you compare the fate of ordinary people and the main characters of the films, then, of course, you will want to become an archaeologist who will find an ancient artifact, a pirate to conquer the seas, etc.

Imagining ourselves in the shoes of a character is an opportunity that cinema gives us. Why not take advantage of it and diversify winter evenings?

You can get emotions from anything, and you can get from all sorts of things. Movies are a legal way to get away from reality and experience new sensations. Especially in 3D, 4D and 5D formats. For example, imagine that the eye of a huge dragon is looking at you, or that you are now falling off a cliff, or how you are flying in an airplane that is falling. In reality, you do not want to experience this. and here it is possible to experience adrenaline in a safe way.

So that the viewer does not yearn or leave the cinema, the film about adventures is created in such a way that it drags on until the very end. Adventurous movies play on this, which makes us, like chained, sit and watch movies without looking away.

Conclusion

Why do we love adventure? Because we get a lot of emotions that are not available in real life. More often arrange yourself movie nights to replenish the supply of emotions and just have a good time.

Movie special effects have been around since the dawn of cinema. They have evolved over time, from simple optical illusions in the pre-cinema era to the incredibly realistic computer-generated imagery of today. This article will look at the development of movie special effects, from their early beginnings to modern-day technology, and explore what the future of special effects might hold.

Early Movie Special Effects

Pre-Cinema Visual Effects

The use of special effects dates back to pre-cinema times, when shadow puppetry and magic lantern shows were used to create illusions and tell stories. Shadow puppetry is a form of storytelling that uses flat figures made of leather or paper that are manipulated by hand, while a light source is used to project their shadows onto a screen. Magic lantern shows, on the other hand, used a device that projected images onto a screen, creating optical illusions.

Early Silent Film Effects

The development of the motion picture camera in the late 19th century opened the door for the use of special effects in movies. Early silent films used a variety of techniques to create effects, such as stop motion animation, matte painting, and rear projection. Stop motion animation is a technique in which objects are moved in small increments between frames, creating the illusion of movement. Matte painting is a technique used to create a painted backdrop for a scene, while rear projection is a technique used to superimpose a moving image onto a background.

Development of Color Effects

The introduction of color film in the early 20th century allowed for the development of color special effects. The most popular of these was Technicolor, a three-strip process that used three separate strips of film to create a color image. Other color processes, such as the dye transfer process and the multi-color process, were also developed.

Modern Special Effects

Computer Generated Imagery

Computer-generated imagery (CGI) has revolutionized the world of special effects. CGI is a form of 3D animation that uses computers to create realistic images. It is used in movies to create characters, creatures, and environments that would be impossible to create using traditional methods. CGI involves a number of steps, such as 3D modeling, texturing, lighting, and rendering.

Motion Capture

Motion capture is a technique used to capture the movements of a live actor and transfer them to a digital character. This allows for incredibly realistic movement and expressions that can be used to create lifelike characters. Motion capture can also be used to capture facial expressions, as well as motion tracking to track the movements of objects in a scene.

3D Animation

3D animation is a form of computer animation that uses three-dimensional objects and environments to create realistic images. It involves a number of steps, such as rigging, key-framing, and motion blur. Rigging is the process of creating a skeleton for a 3D character, while key-framing is used to create the character’s movement. Motion blur is used to create a sense of realism by blurring objects that are moving quickly.

Special Effects in the Future

Augmented Reality

Augmented reality (AR) is a form of technology that overlays digital images and information onto the real world. It can be used to create immersive experiences, such as augmented video, augmented audio, and augmented graphics. Augmented video allows for the creation of virtual sets and environments, while augmented audio can be used to create realistic soundscapes. Augmented graphics can be used to add visual effects to a scene.

Virtual Reality

Virtual reality (VR) is a form of technology that immerses the user in a simulated environment. It can be used to create 360-degree video, immersive audio, and interactive environments. 360-degree video allows the user to explore a virtual world in a realistic way, while immersive audio can be used to create a realistic soundscape. Interactive environments can be used to create games and other interactive experiences.

Holographic Technology

Holographic technology is a form of technology that uses light to create three-dimensional images. It can be used to create holographic displays, holographic projection, and holographic storage. Holographic displays allow for the creation of realistic 3D images, while holographic projection can be used to project images onto a wall or other surface. Holographic storage is a form of data storage that uses light to store information.

Conclusion

Movie special effects have come a long way since the early days of cinema. From simple optical illusions to incredibly realistic computer-generated imagery, special effects have evolved to keep up with the demands of modern film-making. As technology continues to advance, we can expect to see even more realistic and immersive special effects in the future. From augmented reality to holographic technology, the possibilities are endless. Movie special effects have and will continue to have a major impact on cinema, allowing filmmakers to tell stories in ways that were previously impossible.

A girl named Nemo (Marlowe Barkley) lives with her freedom-loving father (Kyle Chandler) on an island isolated from civilization. When her parent dies at sea, the heroine is sent to live with her own uncle Philip (Chris O’Dowd), whom she has never seen before. He is the exact opposite of her brother: a reticent, unsociable, interested only in door locks (he runs a company for their production). Nemo hides from the bleak reality of reality in her dreams. In them, the girl meets Flip (Jason Momoa), a character from her father’s night stories, a brash and boisterous man with goat horns. He declares that Nemo must help him find a certain pearl in the Land of Dreams. She is supposed to help Flip remember who he is. And the girl can meet her father again – albeit in a dream.

“Dreamland” is loosely based on the works of Winsor McKay, a cartoonist from the early 20th century and, incidentally, a pioneer of animation: he was one of the first to experiment with capturing moving drawings on camera. Stories of “Little Nemo in the Land of Dreams” McKay made, however, in the form of comics – also for his revolutionary years. Winzor changed the shape and size of individual frames, sought ways to creatively convey through drawing the experience of being in a surreal dream, and finally, openly mocked the medium and broke the “fourth wall” (it was, we recall, the 10th years of the last century). His work later inspired Walt Disney, the author of Maus, Art Spiegelman, and even Federico Fellini.

On the big screen, his works have already been tried to be adapted. In 1989, a joint American-Japanese cartoon “Little Nemo: Adventures in Dreamland” was released: a curious film, but it failed miserably at the box office. Netflix’s “Dreamland” is only the second attempt to bring McKay’s fantasy into the movie space. And it seems to have failed again.

And it’s not because the creators plowed through the entire plot of “Little Nemo” and built theirs from echoes of the original work. That’s just not the problem: for all of McKay’s artistic genius, he wasn’t the best storyteller. But because the Netflix picture can’t capture even one-hundredth of the creative power of a comic book from a century ago. If “Little Nemo” broke notions about the possibilities of its art form, creating something new and audacious, “Dreamland” is as featureless and passive a movie as it can possibly be. Another streaming “content,” not particularly bad and certainly not too good.

In theory, the dream world in the film is supposed to act as a kind of antipode to Nemo’s boring gray reality with its sterile glass schools and lifeless uncle’s apartment populated by door locks of various ages and sizes. Except that in reality it looks exactly the same faded. The entire Dreamland is five unimpressive locations, some of which are also rather lousy computer-drawn. However, it was strange to expect any vivid surrealism from Francis Lawrence, the author of “Constantine”, “I am Legend”, “Red Sparrow” and a couple of parts of “The Hunger Games”. He is a very uneven director as it is, but more importantly, the kind of director who cannot be called a big fantasist. The texture of “Dreamland” would rather suit some Jean-Pierre Genet, Del Toro or, ideally, Terry Gilliam. Though the latter already has “Tide Land,” essentially a tougher version of the same story.

Lawrence’s directorial creativity is at most enough to occasionally launch a free-flying camera around the characters, which is apparently how he shows the chaotic nature of the dream world. Almost all the striking images like the bed walking around the city in the film are taken directly from McKay. Only Winsor’s love of racial stereotypes did not get adopted (times were different): they were all packed into one harmless joke about Canadians. It must have taken a long time to pick the ones they could still laugh at.

But, more importantly, the whole limitless potential of dream stories was reduced to a completely secondary drama about the acceptance of death. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the very idea of making a children’s movie about a complex problem. Except that in a world spoiled by Pixar, it’s hard to get into the millions of times-repeated truths. Pain has to be accepted in order to get over it and move on. Sometimes what we seem to want is not what we really need. In addition, “Dreamland” speaks the already unsophisticated moral out loud: there are two heroines who in the middle of the film give Nemo little séances of psychoanalysis and chew up the bored viewer all the metaphors.

Such fundamental scripted passivity is not helped by the charisma of Jason Momoa, essentially playing a local version of Jack Sparrow (playing well, but why – Sparrow is already there). Nor the sincere efforts of the other actors: Chris O’Dowd seems to be too good for this movie. “Dreamland” is made with good intentions, but with the wrong hands. For a film about fantasies and daydreams, it surprisingly lacks any creative spark.

After a three-year expedition to China, Alice Kingsley (Mia Wasikowska) returns to London and learns that her mother has sold shares in the trading company her family owned and that Alice may lose her ship and her captaincy because of it. However, the heroine’s family problems recede into the background when Alice, having passed through the mirror, finds herself again in the magic land and learns that her friend Hatter (Johnny Depp) suffers from a deadly depression. Only the resurrection of his relatives can comfort Hatter, so Alice goes to the castle of Time (Sacha Baron Cohen) to convince it to let her go back in time and save Hatter’s family from Jabberwocky. When Time flatly refuses to help the girl, Alice steals the time-traveling chronosphere and is transported several years back.

“Tim Burton’s adaptation of Alice in Wonderland!” In 2010, Disney Studios made audiences an offer they couldn’t refuse, and it made Disney more than a billion dollars. However, the commercial success was not a critical success. Burton’s Alice, written by Beauty and the Beast screenwriter Linda Wolverton, was scolded far more than praised.

Perhaps her most offensive departure from the original was her fundamental reshaping of the main character. Woolverton, once brought in to write Beauty and the Beast as an “expert on feminism,” tried to saturate Alice with feminist clichés and turn Miss Kingsley into a symbol of resistance to the patriarchal norms of Victorian England. However, the screenwriter did not see that Alice from the book by Lewis Carroll was already a perfect embodiment of the feminist ideal. What else to call a self-important girl who does what she thinks is right, says what she thinks, and in the climactic scene throws to a red-tape tribunal, “You’re just a deck of cards!”? Just imagine how this was perceived in nineteenth-century England by those who saw “Alice” as more than just a hilarious nonsense fairy tale!

Trying to make Alice more modern, Wolverton significantly weakened the heroine and turned her into a toy in the hands of fate and duty. Miss Kingsley did not reject the ridiculous laws of the magical world. She followed them scrupulously, finding herself “a warrior to run” for the White Queen and her associates. Of course, this is a necessary and noble cause. But Carroll wrote about something else entirely, and his little heroine was far more radical than Mia Wasikowska’s character. Although she didn’t spout any feminist slogans or wave a sword.

Of course, the heroine of a Hollywood movie of the XXI century can not show such disrespect for the feelings of a man with painted fingernails. And so Alice, having thrown all her captaincy out of her head, once again turns into a warrior on the run and goes back in time. Although she knows that she not only commits a crime, but also risks destroying space-time. The fact is that the chronosphere normally powers the universal Clock and ensures the eternal life of Time. Therefore, the very fact of her abduction puts the universe at risk. But the desire to please his friend outweighs common sense. Although whoever, but the captain of the ship should be able to soberly assess the risks.

The above could be considered adult picking on a children’s fairy tale movie if the chronosphere had transported Alice to an amazing world full of bright new characters. But the novelty of “Alice in Looking Glass” begins and ends the moment Alice enters the spectacular castle of Time and meets the owner of the chronosphere and the clockwork robots that serve him. After that, the heroine’s adventures are reduced to visiting the past of people already familiar to the audience, and the audience learns why the Red Queen has a huge head, why the capricious villain hates the Hatter, what in childhood set the Red and the White Queens at odds, and under what circumstances Time cursed the Hatter.

Probably, there are such ardent fans of Burton’s film that they do not sleep nights pondering over such questions. To such viewers the picture will give a long-awaited sound sleep – it is possible that right during the session. But everyone else probably expects much more from “Alice in Wonderland” than nothing like the magical and surprising family sketches from the childhood of the Hatter and the Queens. Lewis Carroll bothered a century and a half ago to come up with an entirely new adventure in an entertaining new world for the second book. And the creators of the $170 million blockbuster offer audiences only childish quarrels and bad falls and suggest they worry about who ate the cookies years ago and didn’t sweep up the crumbs.

When it comes to the climax, however, Alice’s final quest is to get from point A to point B in time C. And no one interferes with her in this. On the contrary, everyone helps her out of the last effort. At least in the first picture, the heroine had to slay the fearsome dragon. Woolverton was not taught that from series to series the obstacles in the way of the heroes should become higher and more insurmountable?

The furry protagonist of the film remembers his past lives. He remembers how he was first born a street dog and how his life ended when it had barely begun. He remembers his second life as a retriever named Bailey, the faithful companion of a country boy named Ethan. He also remembers being reborn as a police dog in Chicago, as a pet corgi in Atlanta, and as a St. Bernard in the outback, where he was not well cared for. But in his fifth life he lived near the farm of the aging Ethan, and one day they managed to meet again.

The release of the film in the United States was accompanied by a scandal, which broke out because of the leaked video from the shooting. This video made many people suspect that the dogs in the film were being mocked. The authors of the tape insist that the press got a tendentiously edited fragment, which does not reflect the essence and context of what is happening

Lasse Hallström, the regular director of ABBA videos, caught Hollywood’s attention when his 1985 family drama My Dog’s Life was nominated for two Oscars, one for writing and one for directing. Hallström has been working in America ever since, specializing in sentimental and romantic films like “Chocolat,” “Casanova” and “Dear John.”

Although Hallström’s first famous film had the word “dog life” in the title, it was actually the story of a young boy growing up and taking the tragedies that fell upon him hard. This “sin” before dog-lovers was corrected only in 2009, when the director shot the drama “Hachiko: The Most Faithful Friend,” which was mostly about a dog.

Now Hallström has released a movie in which humans are even more in the background and where even Dennis Quaid, who played Ethan in his adulthood, can’t outplay the succession of dogs portraying the reborn central character. Dog lovers, take note! Though you may have a hard time watching a picture where the dogs die or die multiple times and where not all the owners turn out to be as caring as Ethan and dark-skinned student Maya, the corgi owner.

“A Dog’s Life” author Bruce Campbell (no relation to his actor namesake) also wrote the book “8 Simple Rules for My Teenage Daughter’s Friend,” which was the basis for the sitcom of the same name starring Kathy Sagal and Kaley Cuoco

Filming of the film adaptation of Bruce Campbell’s bestseller “A Dog’s Life” was organized by Walden Media studio, which specializes in soulful and moralistic cinema and promotes “right” values with a conservative flavor, but without conservative extremism. All of this applies to “A Dog’s Life” to the fullest extent. The film unashamedly celebrates loving parents, friendly families, good people, honest workers, and frowns upon those who ruin their lives with alcohol, envy the success of others, don’t care about those they have tamed, or fall into despondency when life presents sad surprises.

The main character’s rebirths allow him to go through all the post-war times, and in each era there are decent people who lead the “right” life. It is as if the film is saying that music and fashions change, but true values – love, family, kindness – remain the same. Just as a sincere, selfless dog’s loyalty does not change depending on what nickname the main character wears and what breed he belongs to.

Because the film is shot from the dog’s point of view (often emphasized by the choice of camera angles), it often makes the audience laugh with the way the hero’s voice-over describes his owners’ lives. Let’s say he calls kissing “finding food in other people’s mouths,” and about his police training he says he had a distracted owner who was always losing something and demanding to find it.

There are sad scenes in the film, and not just related to the main character, but because of the abundance of dog jokes, romantic moments and demonstrations of good-nature, “A Dog’s Life” looks like a comic melodrama. It cheers more often than it offers tears, and it drives one not to depression but to contrition. Even those who despise Hollywood’s love of dogs and prefer cats will find it hard to resist a “mee-mee” at the sight of the loyal eyes and playful habits of the characters in A Dog’s Life.

Unfortunately, it’s not a very exciting narrative. The main character remarks at the end of the film that the main thing is to live in the here and now, and “A Dog’s Life” is arranged according to this recipe. But this is a bad principle for a motion picture, because a fascinating story requires movement from point A to point B, not just the recounting of a chain of life events. In none of his lives does the protagonist particularly strive for anything, and this gives his story a waltziness that does not befit a Hollywood movie. However, in this case, it’s not a mistake but part of the plot, so there’s nothing to reproach Hallström for. It would have been worse if he had imposed a dynamic plot on a story where there was none to begin with.
